Hi All

Can someone please tell me if this is normal for RA as you know I'm still new to all this.

Yesterday afternoon I had a flare up in my right ankle (not unusual anymore) and could hardly walk by evening. This morning apart from feeling sore it was ok. I have now developed a large bruise all around the ankle.

Wondering and hoping this is normal for RA.

Hi Anne

It's a steep learning curve isn't it as we find our way around the changes in our bodies and what we are now able (or not!) to do?

I can honestly say I personally have never had a flare that has restricted itself to one joint! It has been knees and lower limbs, arms and hands, neck and shoulders or everything! The inflammation caused by the RA is in the area around the joint the synovium and unless it is exceptionally swollen I wouldn't expect it to bruise as yours has done. Do you often have a problem with your ankle?

Is it possible that you may have suffered a knock or twisted it? The sudden onset, especially with the inability to walk on it, and now bruising is more suggestive of an injury. My personal thought would be if it's not hugely better in the morning to get it checked just in case it is damaged. Unfortunately we can be more susceptible to injury and however slight it seems sometimes needs attention sooner rather than later.

Sorry Anne, but it doesn't really sound too normal to me but others may have experienced similar. Hope it feels better soon,

Hi Anne,
Like Lyn, I have never had a flare in just one joint, it usually affects my whole body.
Having said that , I do occasionally get just one really painful joint. A couple of weeks ago I got out of bed to find I could not bear any weight at all on my left heel. After about 3 days it was back to normal, but definitely no bruising.
So I don't think yours sounds normal either and agree that you should get it checked out.
Hope it feels better soon.

Love, Doreen xx

Hi

Thanks I think I'll put it on my list for next appointment with GP, I'm pretty sure it is not an injury because I havn't done any sport for a good few months, and it is the same pattern as with my other joints the pain starts late afternoon, very painful all evening and fine, well sort of the next day.

I'm just beginning to realise how much my life is changing, from being active, here there and everywhere you have no choice but to slow down. I just grateful both my boys have passed their driving tests and I no longer have to be a taxi mum as well.

Anne.

Hi Anne

When you have RA you do become very susceptible to injury, you don't need to be doing any sport! Sometimes turning over in bed, bending down or twisting quickly can be enough to inflict injury and you won't necessarily know what's caused it. That's the nature of joint disease unfortunately.

What you describe sounds like normal RA behaviour in that as the day wears on our bodies respond accordingly and overworked joints will become tender and inflamed showing a need for rest. Once rested they will improve, generally. A flare affects several or all joints at once and is caused by a breakdown in the action of the immune system and usually takes at the very least a few days and often additional medication to bring under control. When individual joints are affected it is over use of that joint.

BUT where a joint shows damage, as in bruising, and you can't weight bear it suggests to me that something else is going on. Bruising is typically a traumatic injury of the soft tissues that results in breakage of the local capillaries and leakage of red blood cells into the surrounding tissue. It isn't related to RA but the underlying cause could be. If the bruising is still present today or soreness remains I would consider getting a nurse at your surgery to have a look. The joint may require an X-ray and it certainly needs strapping for support to avoid further strain until it repairs. Please get it checked, it could be damaged. I should add perhaps that often medical staff don't always understand RA and you may have to be quite firm ... what they consider to be 'a bit of a bruise or a twisted ankle' could potentially be quite serious (and long term) to someone with RA. Don't wish to scare you in any way but this is unfortunately the reality ThumbDown

Do let us know how things are!

Hi Anne,

My right ankle swells up every day, virtually as soon as I get out of bed in the morning and doesn't go down unless I either put my feet up and rest, for a few hours, or overnight in bed. I wouldn't call it a flare, as others have said a flare affects all your afflicted joints but it is very painful, restricts movement in that joint and affects my walking.

Hello Anne,

Same as Carol - As soon as I start to be on my feet for the day my feet and ankle
swell. Tight and painful.

I do get shooting pains runnign through my feet and sometimes my ankles appear to buckle
so for that reason if I walk outside now i tend to use my stick.

Like Lynn suggest to look at if could be a sports injury

Good luck

I too get very swollen ankles which start the minute I'm on my feet. A lot of that though is to do with water retention brought on by the medication and the RA itself. I occasionally get relief by using the odd water tablet here and there.

The worrying thing about Anne's ankle isn't so much the swelling and pain which is to be expected with RA but with the unusual bruising. Do hope it's nothing serious.

Agree with everyone, get it looked at!! I bruise really easily, and am having tests at haemopohillia clinic and get the results (hopefully) on 7th June. Unknown bruising needs to be looked at. Its quite often nothing to worry about, but all the same, its better to be sure. My daughter said I couldnt wear a skirt on Sunday as it would show my bruises and it looks like I've been battered lol!!!Smile

Thanks everybody.

Ankle no longer painful just bruising, but the thought of keep ringing the doctor trying to get an appointment feels me with dread.

I think you are probably right Lynn, when I use to do alot of sport I had a weak right ankle and had to be careful, so I think maybe now just to much walking or maybe jarring it and not realising is the cause.

Hope you don't mind me keep asking these questions but it really helps does make me feel better and I appreciate the wealth of experience I have on this site.

Nice peaceful evening all of my brood have gone to Wembley to watch England v Mexico.

Hi Anne,

Ask as many questions as you like, there is usually someone who can come up with an answer!
I have learnt more on this forum in three years than I learnt in the 6 years that I had RA before joining!
